Don't we have enough sweaters?

The last thing I need is another sweater.  My drawer is full of them. Jen and I have pinky-sweared "NO MORE SWEATERS!" this season.  Problem is I fell HARD for Fisherman cable knits this fall.
Images from habituallychic.blogspot.com.
The texture of a cable knit is the perfect partner for jeans, waxed or leather pants.  There are lots of style and color options out there in stores. But no pink cable for me.  Just the preppy, classic, gorgeous ivory color that goes with everything.   The search began in earnest.  Candidates must be:
  • Not too heavy but heavy enough to be warm with just a cami under, scarf and jeans.  And ankle booties. Or riding boots.
  • Not too bulky.
  • Somewhat refined so I could wear it to work with trousers...
  • Yet cool enough to work with ponte leggings or waxed jeans
  • An interesting, classic cable pattern.
  • Wool blend, not cotton.
My search turned up these...

525 America, Tusk cable sweater.  It's super cool and the loose turtle is a bit of a spin.

The Theory Innis Cable Knit sweater.  This is a gooood one. Sometimes I throw on a denim shirt underneath and Theory's sweater can handle that.

This Gap cable knit. Gap has great basics and they are doing their own version of cable knit.

At Zara there is this short sleeve cable.  Short sleeve is a nice twist on the classic.

Zara also has this ribbed cable.  It's cute, but it's short in length, so it might be belly-baring which no one, including me, wants to see out in public.

Ahh.  The Vince cable turtleneck.  Very warm and cozy.

The Barbour Beckwith sweater.  Barbour is the classic.  I like the trim fit.

And the new addition to my sweater drawer? Which one made the cut?  This little lovely from Madewell.  Already sold out in store and on-line!

...you need tummy control without VPL.

Hello!  Why yes, it's us!  No, we didn't fall off the face of the earth.  We've been in fashion limbo, that dark time between seasons.  We are gearing up for fall and will be writing more frequently soon!

Summer always brings some undergarment dilemmas.  Strapless bras, backless bras, with many missteps along the way.  But, have I got an item for you!  A good friend turned me onto a couple of Gap Body products and while I was searching the Gap Body site, I found this, which has been an amazing piece to own!  Behold, the tummy control, 'sculpting' thong
Image from gap.com.
Buried under 'Slips & Shapewear' on gap.com, these tricksters have full coverage in the front and a thong back, to eliminate panty lines yet keep your tummy smooth and 'sucked in'.  While the model certainly doesn't need them, I do.  And I have to say, my shorts and pants look better with that added layer of support.  Reviews on gap.com were mixed, but I give them 2 thumbs up.  If this is something you think would work well for you, I encourage you to give them a try.  At $19.99, it might be worth it! A 'brief' note - they are currently only available in a size L, so check back often for a restock! ~ JH

...it's Fall 2012: Color Blocking

Lisa and I are embarking on a series of examining the fall trends that we love, and how to wear them and insert them into your wardrobe.  We hope these posts help you wade through the myriad of trend choices presented each season!

First up is a favorite of mine: color blocking.  The technic of color blocking is when different solid color fabrics are sewn/knit together to make one garment.  Working a color blocked piece into your wardrobe is pretty easy; you usually want to pair the piece with something neutral and solid (black pants, jeans, etc.).  I will definitely be picking up at least one color blocked item for this fall/winter.  The question is: which one?

The fantasy starts here, with this Boy. by Band of Outsiders color-block sweater.  And, a fantasy it shall remain as the price of it is way too high to even discuss.  But, I love it and had to share.  For my non-model-oridinary-life, I would have put it over black skinny jeans or pants and black booties.  Love.

In the 'more reasonable' category, this Vince color block sweater is great, and I can totally imagine it over my leather leggings (leather, another fall topic we'll be discussing...stay tuned) and pointy-toe pumps.
Image from net-a-porter.com.
For a great budget-find, this Gap color block boatneck pullover is an easy addition to anyone's closet at $49.95.  And, it comes in 3 other color-ways too!
Image from gap.com.
Color blocking works well on dresses as well.  This dress from W by Worth is nipped in at the waist to give you a curve even with the boxy blocking. I can see it paired with black, opaque tights and heeled black suede booties.
Image from wbyworth.com.
The side color blocking on this Tinley Road dress makes anyone look like they have an hour-glass figure.  And, at $68, it's a steal!
Image from piperlime.com.
I've seen a number of blouses with some color blocking details on them, but fall in love with this Equipment one.  How great would this work with jeans?

Finally, if you don't feel like you want to go out and purchase a new piece, check out these 'faux' color blocking ideas below.  Add a vibrant turtleneck under a sheath dress, pair bold shoes and top with neutral pants, or go all black and add a pop in a skirt or earring.  Let us know what you end up deciding! ~ JH

...you want free shipping.

Image from asos.com.
Our informal poll of fabulous lady shoppers at a recent softball game brought home the fact that no one likes to pay for shipping.  So much so that we will purchase elsewhere rather than fork over for shipping.  You've been there, haven't you?  You carefully fill your cart and complete your shipping information only to find a $15 dollar shipping fee, and no in-store return.  Frustrating!  Here are some of our favorite places to shop online and ways to get around paying good money for shipping:

J.Crew - Forget free shipping with a $150 purchase or trekking in to use the instore red phone!  Call J.Crew at 1-800-562-0258 and make a friend with the Customer Service professionals.   My Customer Service friend, Kevin, and I have been together  for a little over two years now.  He can help me with anything I need – tracking down hard-to-find items, tips on size and styling, putting outfits together, sneak peeks at upcoming collections, you name it. Just about everything shy of balancing my checkbook and watering my plants.   It's all about service and Kevin takes care of me in spades, plus free shipping.  All the time.

Net-a-Porter - For the latest designer women's clothing, shoes, jewelry and much more from over 350 of the world's leading designers.  Free shipping all the time.  (And, as an aside, they have complimentary gift wrap too.)
Image from net-a-porter.com.
Amazon - Feep your eyes on this powerhouse as the company finally recognizes the opportunity and refocuses to fashion.  Amazon PRIME gets you free shipping.

Asos - Over 850 fashion labels, and offering free shipping, both ways.  Everyday.

Under the heading of obvious:  NordstromL.L.Bean, Zappos, Gap family (Piperlime, free shipping all the time, Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic, free shipping on orders over $50), Neiman Marcus (usually with a code, but NOT Bloomingdales or Saks), and Kate Spade.

I got a fabulous leather t-shirt (which you'll see more of this fall) from Topshop.  And it came with....free shipping (on orders over $100).

ShopBop has one of the best selections of Diane von Furstenberg I've seen, and has a  limited edition collaboration with Current Elliott.   They feature familiar brands like Rachel Zoe and more obscure, coveted ones like Soludos.

If you're like Jen, in the eternal search for T-shirts, try StyleMint from Mary Kate and Ashley. You complete a fun profile and then voila! The Olsen sissies put together a ensemble of tees to choose from. All $29.99 and shipped free.

For men, Bonobos is at the top of my list.  Featured in the NY Times, Bonobos was started to solve a simple problem: men’s pants just don’t fit well. They’re either too tight to be comfortable or too baggy to look good. But, by innovating in a few key areas, they’ve developed a fit that they say actually looks and feels great for a wide variety of men.  They have sweaters, jackets, accessories, golf, swim, outerwear and boast "Fast and Free shipping.  Insanely easy returns."  Keep talking 'cause I like what you're sayin'.

...you are traveling to Paris - what to wear on the plane.

Now that I've tackled daywear and dinner attire, it's time to talk about the plane.  From the east coast, Europe is a relatively quick overnight flight away.  Around 6 hours, my strategy is to eat dinner on the plane, turn my watch to the new timezone, and get to sleep.  If I can manage to get 4 hours on the plane, I'm good to go when we land.

But, what to wear?  I have a 'uniform' that I've honed over the years.  The 'uniform' is all about comfort, neutral colors, and looking 'smart' as you deplane.

I start with the pants - I don't like wearing jeans on an overnight flight, so I usually pick my Michael Kors Ponte ankle pants.  These are stretchy, and don't wrinkle, so when I deplane, I look pretty fresh.
Image from nordstrom.com.
I usually always put on ballet flats, and I have a preference for Vera Wang or Tory Burch ballet flats in a metallic color.  Very comfortable, slipper like, they do the trick.  And, for some reason, the metallic Tory ones stand up to all kinds of weather.
Image from toryburch.com.
On top, I like to layer.  This time of year, I like to do a long sleeve t-shirt over a short sleeve one, topped off with a scarf.  Yes, sounds a little odd, but that extra layer of the short sleeve underneath adds the warmth you need on the overnight flight.  Let's be honest, it's C-O-L-D 30,000 feet over the Atlantic.   So, I usually wear a solid, long sleeve t-shirt, like this grey one from the Gap...
Image from gap.com.
...over a white crew-neck t-shirt, that is maybe even a little longer than the long-sleeve, so it hangs out a little bit at the hemline...
Image from gap.com.
...with a fabulous scarf wrapped around my neck.
Image from nordstrom.com.
It's a very neutral, dark look, but nothing wrinkles, so you'll be comfortable sleeping in coach (not!), and be wrinkle-free in the morning.

But, I have yet to mention perhaps the most important item for the plane.  It's a pashmina shawl.  Remember?  You bought one or 2 back in the late 90s when they were all the rage?!  Well dig one out, because I cannot make it on an overnight flight without one.
Image from thepashminastore.com.
My black one, purchased in Paris back in 1996, has been here, there, and everywhere with me.   It's cashmere, so it's lightweight, super soft, and acts as my blanket (because those plane blankets are awful, let's just be honest) and then in the 'morning', I wrap it around me as one more layer of warmth before deplaning.  I swear, wrap that thing around you, with your black ponte pants and your ballet flats and you actually look somewhat put together as you wander to the bathroom on the plane to put your contact lenses back in.

You are now free to move about the cabin. ~ JH

...you need white pants.

Who doesn't adore white pants!? They are crisp, classic and for those of us who live in New England, a sure sign of better weather ahead.  Now that Spring is officially here at retail, there's a million choices out there to satisfy your every white pant whim.  But where to start?  The well-outfitted closet has a selection that includes:

Boot Cut Denim - for heels and wedges.
Skinny leg - for ballet flats and sandals.
Trousers - for heels and going out.

Here's my take on the best fitting ones out there:

Boot Cut

White Denim Boot cut from J.Crew.  The fit on these are great...not to low.  Classic and perfect with heeled pumps or sandals, nautical sweater or denim shirt.  Done! $98.

Citizens of Humanity, Amber Santorini Mid-Rise Boot Cut, $164 at Neiman Marcus.  As versatile as it is universally flattering, boot-cut denim is a wardrobe essential. These Citizens of Humanity jeans capitalize on that leg-lauding magic with a slightly higher rise, which beautifully contours and conforms to your waist.

Skinny & Cropped

AG White Stilt, the perfect skinny leg white denim for sandals.  $175 at Calypso.

Michael Kors does a great job with pants.  I like these lightweight ones with a hint of stretch.  $79.50 at Nordstrom.

From the Gap, 1969 always skinny flood jeans for $45.  Remember when flood pants were a bad thing?

J. Crew says that the Cafe Capri is its "cream of the crop capri".  Crafted in crisp, clean cotton, with a hind of stretch.  $89.50.

Trousers

BCBG Carrie Flare Leg, $110 at Bloomingdales.  Pair with a silk top for a great night out look.

Classiques Entier Maxella Wide Leg Stretch Trousers.  $168 at Nordstrom. Ok, how amazing would these pants make a girl look?

Hello lovely Cafe Trousers from J. Crew, $89.50.

Last note:  W by Worth has a fantastic pair of lightweight cotton pants called the 'Nona' that come in white and lots of fun colors.  $199, available from Heather Steele at W by Worth in Wellesley, MA. Jennifer and I both have a pair, and love them!

Happy shopping for white pants! ~ LB
