Wanted: A basic sweater that is not basic.

You are not navy or gray.  Or black.  You are easy to wear and comfortable.  You make me look fabulous and put together.  I can throw you on with skinny jeans in any color.  Or trousers and a jacket.  Or layer you under vest or big comfy sweater.  You make those blue suede wedges I got last year look even better this year.  You can share the spotlight with a necklace or look fab without one.

Hello Joie silk animal print top.   Your mix of silk body and wool sleeves is genius.   Your shades of gray, black and white are perfection.  Welcome to my closet.

It's out there this year.  The non-basic, basic sweater.  Love this Tory burch top and whole look from head to toe.

PS - In full disclosure, Jen also purchased the Joie sweater, completely on her own and separately.  What's the etiquette here?! - JH

...you have pale turquoise pants from J. Crew.

We cannot say enough how much we love readers' questions!  A neighbor emailed this question to us today.

"Please advise which tops (color and type) would go nicely with these turquoise cords as well as a shoe other than a ballet flat. Am I going to be able to rock these in the winter, oui or non? Thank you Ladies."
Image from jcrew.com.
Oui!  Yes, you can rock these this winter.  I have to admit, it's a tricky color to work with, but in pants like these, you won't see yourself coming and going.  A few rules first. When wearing a distinctive color, try to do neutrals for the rest of the outfit, letting the unique color stand out.  Also, with a delicate color like this, black is out.  It's just too overwhelming for the paleness of the color.

My first thoughts are to try for navy, medium gray, white, or cream on the top.  Since they are cords, you can do casual sweaters, either turtlenecks or a crew neck with a scarf.  If you want a little more polish, a silk blouse is always a good option.

Look for a neutral shoe in variations of platinum, silver, or a lighter camel.  A bootie would be great in a light camel or grey depending on the top you choose.  Wedges are always fun, and the trendy 'smoking slipper' is a great ballet-flat-replacement.  Don't forget that a more delicate cheetah print can be used as neutral; here I would use it in a belt or a shoe if the print is more muted.

See the outfits below that I put together to see some looks with these pants.  I love the Vince sweater; the sweater color is between brown and grey and the softness of the color works well with the pants. The Joie silk top in navy is HEAVEN with these pants and an enamel bracelet really brings the look together.   The cheetah belt with the white silk Equipment blouse is unexpected and the booties give a little polish too.  Throw a cashmere 'duster' over when the weather turns cooler.

Hope that helps! ~ JH

...it's Fall 2012: Color Blocking

Lisa and I are embarking on a series of examining the fall trends that we love, and how to wear them and insert them into your wardrobe.  We hope these posts help you wade through the myriad of trend choices presented each season!

First up is a favorite of mine: color blocking.  The technic of color blocking is when different solid color fabrics are sewn/knit together to make one garment.  Working a color blocked piece into your wardrobe is pretty easy; you usually want to pair the piece with something neutral and solid (black pants, jeans, etc.).  I will definitely be picking up at least one color blocked item for this fall/winter.  The question is: which one?

The fantasy starts here, with this Boy. by Band of Outsiders color-block sweater.  And, a fantasy it shall remain as the price of it is way too high to even discuss.  But, I love it and had to share.  For my non-model-oridinary-life, I would have put it over black skinny jeans or pants and black booties.  Love.

In the 'more reasonable' category, this Vince color block sweater is great, and I can totally imagine it over my leather leggings (leather, another fall topic we'll be discussing...stay tuned) and pointy-toe pumps.

For a great budget-find, this Gap color block boatneck pullover is an easy addition to anyone's closet at $49.95.  And, it comes in 3 other color-ways too!

Color blocking works well on dresses as well.  This dress from W by Worth is nipped in at the waist to give you a curve even with the boxy blocking. I can see it paired with black, opaque tights and heeled black suede booties.

The side color blocking on this Tinley Road dress makes anyone look like they have an hour-glass figure.  And, at $68, it's a steal!

I've seen a number of blouses with some color blocking details on them, but fall in love with this Equipment one.  How great would this work with jeans?

Finally, if you don't feel like you want to go out and purchase a new piece, check out these 'faux' color blocking ideas below.  Add a vibrant turtleneck under a sheath dress, pair bold shoes and top with neutral pants, or go all black and add a pop in a skirt or earring.  Let us know what you end up deciding! ~ JH
