My May Obsession - Mirrored Silver

"Lisa, what did I do without this shoes in my life?"

Yes, I said that.  I recently purchased two pairs of shoes, both mirrored silver.  One flat, one pump.  And honestly, what did I wear before them?  I am wearing them ALL THE TIME.  They are my new neutral, my go-tos, and soon they will be paying me to wear them.  What shoes are these you wonder?  Behold.  First up, Whistles mirrored silver ballet flats.

Both shoes look great with everything!  Black, jeans, white, grey, even colors; these are the new neutral.   And now that I'm obsessed with mirrored silver, I keep seeing it everywhere!  And I want to buy more. Purses, clutches, sandals.  Watch out!  Put this on your radar and shake up your outfits with this updated, modern material.  See below for inspiration; yes, you can fit this into your wardrobe! ~ JH

In search of a navy pump.

At a dinner on Thursday night, my friend (and W2WW reader) was talking about how there are NO navy pumps out in the market.  This friend is a professional - think high-pressure meetings and the suits to match.  She's a serious executive and needs serious clothing for the job.    While this isn't my current world (SAHM), I know all about obsessions when it comes to clothing.  I told her "No problem; I'm on it.".  We LOVE the hunt at W2WW!

She'll be pleased to know that she can update her current kitten-heels with a click of a mouse.  My quick, online search using polyvore.com revealed lots of options.

First up?  The DVF Bethany heel.  Standing near 4" tall, it might be too tall for my friend, but worth a look.  It's a patent navy, which can be a plus in inclement weather, but she might just want leather.

Next is one of my favorites - the Jimmy Choo Embossed Printed Leather Pump.  I love the leather on this and the heel height of 3.3" makes it completely wearable.  A classic, year-round shoe.

Zappos was bound to have something, and it does, with the Elie Tahari Electra Pump.  With a lower heel height of 2 3/4", it might be even better for running to and from meetings.

If she wants something a little exotic, Manolo Blahnik is showing these Twixpla Low-Heeled Pump with eelskin.  Oh yes, she'll pay a bit more for these - the $825 price tag is a little jaw dropping.  But the heel height is perfect and the eelskin makes for an interesting texture.

I'd like to see the blue on these in person (is it truly navy or a little lighter?!), but I know how comfortable Chloe shoes are, especially with a stacked heel.  My friend should check out these Chloe Scalloped Leather Pumps.

Finally, a tried a true classic - the Manolo Blahnik BB in Navy.  How could she go wrong with this shoe?!

it's Fall 2013: Colorful, Suede Pumps

Fall is BY FAR my favorite season.  Sweaters, jackets, boots, oh my!  I love the crisp air, changing leaves, and the CLOTHING.

Before I departed for summer pastures, I HAD to stick my head into Nordstrom to see what was arriving for fall.  I had my 2 girls fresh out of school, so I only had time to zip through the shoe department.  And these were there.  The Saint Laurent Pointy Toe Pump.  In dark green.  Oh, how I love thee.

Note:  Yes, Saint Laurent is Yves Saint Laurent.  Back in 2012, YSL underwent a 'rebranding' and now, it is Saint Laurent Paris.

Anyway, I LOVE suede and these were lovely.  And then, I started looking around and there was an array of lovely, colorful suede pumps.  Like these...

Round toe, pointy toe (which will be the better choice for 2013 - more on that later), platform, metal heel.  But all in suede and all colorful.

What would you wear them with?!  A neutral pallet - all black, all camel.  With denim.  Think about it as 'color blocking' your feet!  Check out these images from PInterest for inspiration.

Very now and very hot.  While I contemplate the hunter green Saint Laurents versus the blue Jimmy Choos, check out the Polyvore set I put together, showcasing the wide range of pumps!  Happy fall! ~ JH

...you are hosting the holiday.

This is always tricky.  You have family coming over or staying with you, your kitchen is full of people, the oven(s) is(are) on, and you feel like you are going from one meal to the next.  How can you look stylish and together when your head is in the oven all day?

Here are a couple of tricks I've learned over the years that I thought I'd share with you:
  • Wear short sleeves, regardless of your outfit being a dress, top and skirt, or top and pants.  Do you really want to cook in a heavy sweater or long sleeve blouse?  I don't.
  • If you are going to wear heels, try wedges or stacked heels.  I can't help myself.  I love heels.  I have a couple of good wedges or stacked pairs that work well for being on your feet all day.
  • Beware of 'dangling jewelry' and scarves.  I can't tell you how many times I've almost burned a scarf leaning over the stove.  With the additional frenzy of the holidays, leave the scarf in your dresser.  Ditto with pendant necklaces, etc.  Last thing you need is for your pendant necklace to take a dip in the gravy.
  • Stay away from wool and leather.  Jersey, either cotton and silk, is a great material.  Silk blouses are good, light-weight options.
Finally, from a good friend, don't forget to set up a 'lip stick station' in your nearest bathroom or near a mirror.  At the beginning of the day, put your lip stick or gloss, a pressed powder compact, and brush or powder puff in your 'station'.  Over the course of the day, refresh!  You'll be happy to look refreshed instead of shiny when you sit down for dinner.  My 'station' is always in my 1/2 bath in the drawer under the sink.

Best of luck over the next week, and all the best to you and yours. ~ LB & JH

...attending a college reunion.

With my husband's 25th college reunion in just a few days, my attention is turning to my closet and what to wear.  This isn't just a one night affair, slam-dunked with a LBD (translation:  little black dress).  Oh no, this is a 5-Day event during the course of which, the pendulum will swing from commencement exercises, cocktail receptions and garden party to a reception with the University President and Dean, a Family Field day, a dance party, and a concert with the Psychedelic Furs and English Beat.  Might as well just pack up the whole closet and call it a day.

If you've got a reunion, graduation or wedding coming up, here's a sampling of what I'll be doing:

Do get a mani/pedi!  For manicure, I like nude nails so when they chip during your stay, it won't be so noticable. My fave is OPI Bubble Bath which also comes in gel. I'm partial to red toes right now before we get into summer, but anything goes on the toes!

Because I am a person who like CHOICES, to dress on whatever whim I'm feeling or change with the weather that is blowing through Cambridge at the moment, I'm going to bring lots of OPTIONS.

For cocktail reception, enter LBD. This Rachel Zoe silhouette is really is divine, with just the right amount of drape across the tummy to make it all work.  With a white blazer if it's cool.  Add these gorgeous Jimmy Choo snakeskins and all done!

Next up, the garden party.  Picked up this very cute dress at Sara Campbell in Wellesley the other day.  It'll be perfect in the 80 degree heat we're expecting.   I'll pair it with navy wedge espadrilles and a navy sweater or white blazer.

Just in case, I will also pack this J.Crew pink lace top and Alice and Olivia white pants which will be a good back up for any occasion for the warm weather this week.

Concert night?  The Psychedelic Furs/English Beat concert is begging for jeans and a t.  'nuf said.

Top it off with a great purse.  The chain and tassel detail on this Rebecca Minkoff bag will be perfect to hold lipstick, cell, $, and license (though I don't suppose they'll be carding at a 25th reunion) for all reunion activities.

And off I go on Wednesday!  I hope to report back with pics of fabulous fashions from the forty-something set in attendance! ~ LB

Demystifying personal shopping - Part 1.

My foray into personal shopping started several years ago with (ahem) my 20th high school reunion on the horizon.  The reunion was in November, and I knew I wanted to look great without looking like I had tried too hard.  Tall order.

I had been trolling around Nordstrom in the months prior and this one salesperson, Loren Munro, helped me with a couple of things here and there.  With the reunion coming up, I got my nerve up and approached her in the store one day.  "Do you help dress people for events?"  The answer was 'yes', and I told her what my situation was.  Turns out that Nordstrom provides this service for free.

We made an appointment, I gave her my sizes, and I told her that I would love to have a dress but not too formal, not sleeveless, and that looked great.  (Full discloser - I also said that I didn't care how much it cost too look good. Bad, I know, but I really wanted a great outfit.)

The appointment rolled around. I had no idea what to expect.  I was nervous. I asked Lisa to come with me.  I was to meet Loren on the second floor and have her paged.  I did as I was told, and was ushered into a dressing room full of dresses and outfit combinations she pulled in advance for me.  Pairings that I would have never thought of or dared to try on on my own.

The first outfit I gravitated toward turned out to be the one I purchased.  An M Missoni knit dress, topped with a 3.1 Philip Lim black wool ruffled cocktail coat.  Cocktail ring to match too.  All there, from different departments, pulled together. I loved it, Lisa loved it, I purchased it, and never looked back.  (Being the clever one that Loren was, she also stocked the room with a couple of other items I just couldn't leave there.)

I went to my reunion in that outfit, feeling polished and put together.  I was hooked on personal shopping.

Over the next few years, not only did I become a regular client of Loren's, but Lisa did too.  Turns out that having a stylist in your corner was a good thing. That Philip Lim cocktail coat apparently never even hit the store floor - it sold out to personal shopping clients that same day it arrived, happily, the day of my appointment.  A pair of Jimmy Choos that I couldn't justify buying for full price?  Months after I had tried them on, I received a call from my contact in the shoe department (who I met via Loren) that a pair had been returned, in my size and they were now on sale, 60% off.  Did I want them?  Oui!  Lisa snagged a rag & bone jacket that was sold out within moments of their July Anniversary sale with Loren's help. (Certain fall items go on sale for a limited time during Nordstrom's July Anniversary sale and then return to normal price.)

Loren was amazing, and being so, got promoted and moved out of state to greener pastures at other Nordstrom stores.  What were we to do?

I called the store manager and asked her who she recommended.  Amy Swartz was the answer.

So, Amy and I (and Amy and Lisa), have seasonal appointments.  One in February for spring/summer, one in July for fall, and a little one in October for holiday.  I email a list of my needs to Amy prior to the appointment, tell her the price-point that I'm comfortable with (although she just knows now - that was at the beginning), and make a date.  I arrive for the appointment, and she will have a dressing room full of options, all different price points, including shoes and accessories to experiment with.

I have my February appointment on Monday, and CANNOT WAIT.  There are several things that make this personal shopping experience worthwhile:
  • Amy knows the stock on the floor and what's coming in.  She pulls pants from one department, a top from across the store, and shoes from downstairs.  It would take me hours to do that on my own.
  • It's efficient.  I'm very specific about what I need.  If the store has it, it's in that dressing room for me when I get there.  No hunting around.
  • Things can surprise you.  I bought a $69 dress that looked like a million bucks one fall. I've also made investment purchases that will last for years.  Taking the store departments out of the shopping experience makes you really look at the item of clothing for what it is.
But be warned:  not all personal shopping experiences are the same.  Hooked on personal shopping, Lisa and I made an appointment at Bloomingdales in New York City last September.  We were assigned to a gentleman (who we discovered while we were there, worked in the men's department) who pulled maybe 5 pieces of clothing for each of us prior to the appointment time.  He insisted that we walk around the store with him and he would hold the pieces we selected.  What?  Really?  Wasn't that what we wanted him to do?  When it was clear he had no knowledge of the women's departments and wasn't going to put together any outfits for us, we left.  I purchased nothing.  Lisa bought one top, which she ended up returning.  2 hours of precious shopping time wasted.

Therefore, I'm really looking forward to Monday.  I'm prepping, and will post my shopping list soon.  Stay tuned for that, and the report on Monday! ~ JH
